School Leadership

Head of School & Executive Board

Dr. Chrissie Sorenson was born in the USA and grew up on the beautiful Monterey Peninsula in California. She holds a doctorate in Educational Leadership from the University of San Diego, an MBA in International Management from the Monterey Institute of International Studies and a Bachelor’s in German from the University of California, Davis.

Raised as a typical Third Culture Kid (TCK) - mother is German, father is Canadian – she feels most at home in a multi­cultural environment and has raised her family to do the same. Chrissie is married and has three children. Her two older children have both graduated with IB Diplomas, with one having finished his studies in the UK and the other in Australia. Her youngest son, Dirk, is in the BIS Secondary School in Haimhausen, and particularly likes swimming, math and books. After 20 years as a General Contractor, her husband, Darin, has his own business as a Handyman for ex-pats.

To maintain balance, she enjoys swimming, yoga, reading and most of all, spending quality time with her family.

Business Director & Executive Board

Marco Dahl joined BIS in July 2006 relocating from northern Germany’s Düsseldorf region. He studied Economics and gathered work experience all over Germany until he found his home with BIS.

Starting to support the Accounting/Controlling Department at BIS he established a strong relationship with the school and became a responsible team member together with the Principals in planning the whole school timetable. He also became the contact person for all government related issues and got involved in most areas around and within the school. In 2009 Marco joined the BIS Leadership Team as Financial & Educational Services Controller.

Marco enjoys travelling around the world and is proud member of a small social project running a Kindergarten/Pre-­School in the Gambia, West Africa.

Deputy Head of School

Shary Marshall serves as the Deputy Head of School at BIS where she is responsible for teaching and learning including Educational Technology across the school’s academic divisions. Prior to joining the BIS community in August 2019, Shary served in a variety of teaching and leadership roles across the globe in places such as Taiwan, China, Bulgaria, Czechia, Israel, and the United States. 

Originally from Texas, Shary was curious about the world from a young age, with an early interest in maps, stamp collecting, and writing to penpals around the world.  

An avid learner, Shary has a bachelor’s degree in applied learning and development from the University of Texas at Austin and a master’s degree in educational leadership and policy studies from the University of Vermont.  She is a graduate of the COETAIL program (Certificate of Educational Technology and Information Literacy) has recently enrolled in a doctoral program at the University of Kentucky. 

In her free time she enjoys spending time with family, travel, reading, trying out new recipes and spending time in nature.

Primary School City Campus

(Grades EC-5)


Dr. April Yetsko joined the BIS team as the Primary Principal at City Campus in August 2019. She joined BIS after working as Head of School with international schools in Panama and Venezuela and prior to that was the Director and Founder of Vida Charter School, a dual immersion charter school in the United States. She started her career in education with Teach for America and found a passion for working towards equity in education by addressing the needs of diverse learners, earning a Master’s Degree for Special Education for the Culturally and Linguistically Diverse and a Doctoral Degree in K-12 Leadership. Her experiences and education have given her great opportunities to grow, as April continues to develop as a master learner on topics of professional interest such as inquiry learning, 21st Century skills, personalized learning, inclusive practices, and global citizenship.
April resides with her Venezuelan husband and her three school aged children. She also has two young adult daughters attending universities in Panama City and Rome. The family is currently bilingual (English-Spanish) and excited to learn German. April and her bi-cultural family enjoy working, studying, traveling, community service and spending time in nature.

Vice Principal & PYP Coordinator

Nicola Moloney joined BIS in 1995 and has been involved in the PYP programme from its infancy. As a classroom teacher, she has taught every grade level from Early Childhood to Upper Primary. Nicola has a passion for curriculum and has been involved in curriculum development and the advancement of the educational programme throughout the school. She moved to the City Campus in August 2017.

Nicola completed her teacher training in Nottingham in England. She also has a Masters in Education, a Bachelor of Arts in Geography and is trained to teach Special Educational Needs and English as an Additional Language.

Nicola has an Irish husband, Joe, and they have three daughters. Ciara is at university, Aoife graduated from BIS in 2019 and Aisling, her youngest, is in a Grade 10 class. Nicola is an avid reader. She values exercise and fresh air, enjoying swimming, walking, camping, skiing and playing tennis. She is an Irish Dancing mum, supporting her children as they compete both nationally and internationally.

Primary School Haimhausen Campus

(Grades EC-5)


Angela Hölzl is the Principal of the Primary School. She first joined BIS in 2004 as a Grade 3 classroom teacher and has been actively involved in the Primary School curriculum development ever since. In 2004 she also became an official IBPYP workshop leader and moved into the position of Assistant Principal/Curriculum Coordinator in 2006. Angela has gone on to facilitate in­school workshops, regional workshops and participate in school visits throughout the Europe, Africa and Middle East region, as well as develop curriculum documents for the International Baccalaureate Organisation.

Angela is well accustomed to living in Munich having previously worked at Munich International School and being married to Hubert, who is a native Bavarian. She has two children, Laura and Alexander and both children are bilingual. Originally Angela comes from Manchester in England and first came to live in the Munich area in 2001.

She studied for her Bachelor of Education with Honours in Liverpool and went on to teach in an inner city school in Manchester before moving to Germany. Since then she has completed a Masters degree in Educational Leadership. After 9 years of “on the job” training, in August 2015, she took on the role of Primary Principal at the Haimhausen Campus.

Vice Principal & PYP Coordinator

Annette Austin joined our team from South Africa where she was Principal of a small International school for which she attained IBPYP accreditation. In her educational journey Annette has taught both in South Africa and at various educational institutions in Germany including 5 years at MIS. She has been a PYP Co­-ordinator, is a team member visiting PYP schools seeking accreditation and acts as a consultant for the IB to a number of candidate PYP schools.

Annette is married to John and their youngest daughter is a student at BIS in the Secondary School. Her 2 older daughters both have BComm degrees and are working in South Africa. Annette has a passion for baking and loves exploring Bavaria on her bicycle with her family as well as all the other exciting adventures living in Bavaria and Europe holds.

She believes in raising well rounded, balanced individuals where there is a real commitment to nurturing, moulding and sculpting each child and enjoys working together with a team of professionals to achieve this.

Secondary School Haimhausen Campus

(Grades 6-12)

Principal (Grades 6-8)

Brett Meuli is the Principal (Grades 6-8) of the Secondary School. This involves setting key expectations for and supporting the staff and students in these grades.
Brett joined the BIS leadership team in 2010 as Middle School Assistant Principal and MYP Coordinator having previously held a variety of leadership and teaching posts in New Zealand, Singapore and Indonesia. Brett has a Bachelor of Arts in History, an Associate Degree in Social Sciences, a Diploma of Management and a Diploma of Teaching.
Brett has worked extensively for the International Baccalaureate Organisation (IB) in the Asia/Pacific and Africa/Europe/Middle East regions since 2003 as a workshop leader, moderator, consultant and schools visitor. Originally from New Plymouth in New Zealand, Brett is happily married to Julie and away from school he enjoys football, reading, fitness and travel.

Principal (Grades 9-12)

Dr. Rohan Skene joined BIS in August 2009 as a teacher of economics and has had various roles in the senior leadership team including IGCSE Co-ordinator, IB Diploma Programme Co-ordinator and Secondary Deputy Principal - Pastoral. He is focused on ensuring an effective blend of successful academic performance and comprehensive support for our wonderful senior students. Rohan is an advocate for student wellbeing and empowerment and champions the positive education, enrichment and student voice programmes at BIS.
Rohan has Bachelors in Economics and Commerce, a Graduate Diploma in Education, a Masters of Arts, a Doctor of Education and a total of 24 years-experience as an educator in Australia, the UK and Germany. Rohan is married to Julia (a native German) and has two daughters and one son. He appreciates the cultural, sporting and festive aspects of Munich life.

IB DP Coordinator

Loay Malek joined BIS in August 2013 as a teacher of Mathematics and the Pastoral Leader for Grades 11 and 12. In August 2015 he joined the senior leadership team, assuming the role of the IB Diploma Program Coordinator. His main role as IB Diploma Co-ordinator involves the support and mentoring of all IB Diploma students. To this end he works to ensure that they have a balanced set of subjects, which reflect their strengths, with a view to their future careers. He also administers the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program as a whole.
Loay has a Bachelors degree in Aeronautical Engineering, a Graduate Diploma in Education, a Masters of Education in Educational Management and Leadership, and brings a total of twenty years experience as an educator to BIS.
Loay is married to Nadine (Head of Mathematics Department at BIS), and has two daughters currently enrolled at BIS. He appreciates the school ethos and strives, along with the entire school community, to articulate authentic learning practices that will enable BIS graduates to develop well beyond their years within our school.

IB CP Coordinator

Sophie Kropman is the IB CP Coordinator at BIS. Sophie was born in Melbourne, Australia, and has been teaching in  international schools for 18 years. She is married to Paul Kropman (Grade 5 teacher at BIS) and they have two daughters. After the second child was born and the family decided to begin their international adventure. The family has since lived in Dubai and now in Germany working at international IB schools. 

Sophie graduated with a Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Commerce majoring in Political Science, Business Management and Marketing with minors in Economics and German. She also completed a Graduate Diploma in Education (Secondary). She has had experience in numerous roles in various schools and educational contexts including Head of Department for Humanities, a subject auditor, assessor and examination writer, a published author and now as the CP Co-ordinator. She has taught DP Economics, Business Management and TOK here at BIS and is excited about teaching the Personal And Professional Skills with the CP students this year. 

Her passions include learning new things - especially about political events and movements as well as positive psychology, mindfulness and the teenage brain. Her interests vary from politics, history and adolescent health and development, to the metaphysical including astrology. Anything that can broaden the mind is something she will be immersed in.

IB MYP Coordinator

Dr. Erin Foley joined the BIS teaching staff in 2013 as a member of the science department, and has taught MYP Sciences as well as Diploma chemistry, biology, and ToK. As MYP coordinator, she works with staff to implement a quality programme that aligns with the MYP framework and is consistent with the IB philosophy, and supports students from their transition into MYP from the Primary Years Program in Grade 6 all the way through their entrance into the Diploma Program after Grade 10. Outside of the classroom, she coaches cross country, girls basketball, and track and field at BIS.  

Erin holds a Bachelor’s degree in biological sciences from the University of Notre Dame and a Ph.D. from the Department of Biochemistry and Cell Biology at Rice University, as well as a Masters degree in secondary education from St. Joseph University.  

Erin grew up in the midwestern United States, and moved to Munich from Houston in 2009 with her husband, Matt, and their three daughters who are currently students at BIS.  Outside of school and family time, she enjoys running, biking, hiking, and skiing.

Pastoral Coordinator

Claire Ashbee was born and raised just outside Liverpool, England. She has an international heritage that includes Irish, English, Indian and French. Claire has a Bachelor of Arts in Business Education, a graduate teaching certificate for English as an Additional Language, and is working on her Masters in Advanced Educational Practice, specialising in educational leadership and pastoral care. She joined the humanities department at BIS in 2003. Alongside being an IB examiner, Claire has held several roles of responsibility including CAS Coordinator, IGCSE Coordinator, Examinations and Reporting Officer, and Pastoral Leader for Grades 9 and 10.

Claire is responsible for the secondary school pastoral system, which includes the grade level pastoral leaders and class mentors. She strongly advocates for the caring ethos at BIS, the school motto of “Believe. Inspire. Succeed”, and is passionate about ensuring that every student receives the appropriate guidance and support they need to flourish. Claire also oversees the Enrichment Programme (EP), PSHE curriculum and assemblies.

Claire is married to Ian and has 3 sons. They enjoy living in Bavaria, and are appreciative of the culture, and the easy accessibility to the warm Mediterranean climate as well as the beautiful Alpine regions for biking, hiking and skiing. Claire recently cemented her commitment to Germany by adopting dual British-German citizenship.

Whole School

Head of Student Support Services and Child Protection Officer

Emily MacSwain serves as the Head of Student Support Services and Child Protection Officer here at BIS. She works across the whole school to oversee Counselling and Learning Support and also works in concert with the English as an Additional Language department. Originally from California, Emily joined BIS in 2013 as the Head of Counselling. One of the many highlights of her days here at BIS is greeting the kids in the morning outside.
She graduated from Antioch University in Keene, New Hampshire with a Master’s of Arts in Marriage and Family Therapy. She previously worked at a college preparatory boarding school and at a child and family therapy unit of psychiatric clinic in Connecticut. Emily has also taught psychology and wellness. Prior to her career in the academic and counselling world, Emily earned her Bachelor of Arts in Art History and Studio Art from Occidental College in Los Angeles, California. After graduation, she worked as a Fundraising and Public Programs Manager in New York City until changing directions to help people more directly through counselling and working with students.
Emily is an avid runner who coaches both Cross-­Country and Track and Field at BIS. She is an extremely frequent traveler, loves to cook gluten­free food, is a cheerfully slow Alpine skier, and regularly heads out for mountain hikes.

Head of Information Technology

Kevin Skidmore has been working at BIS since November of 2005. In 2012 he joined the BIS leadership team with responsibilty for the Campus IT Infrastructure and Instructional Technology.
Kevin is an American who has found a new home in Germany along with his wife Maureen who teaches at BIS, and their three children Anna, Julie, and James who were all born in Munich.
Prior to joining BIS Kevin has held technology leadership roles at a variety of both large and small companies and most recently at a financial services startup in Atlanta Georgia. In his spare time Kevin enjoys travelling around Europe, biking, and playing guitar and bass.

Senior Financial Controller & Data Protection Officer

Janina Peters was born in Frankfurt and relocated to Munich in 2008 after finishing her studies in Wiesbaden with a LLM in Business Law degree. During her first profession at one of the big four auditing companies, she was part of the auditing team at BIS, which is how she got to know this exciting and so different work place compared to the “industry”.
In May 2013 Janina joined BIS as the Senior Financial Controller, being involved and working together with almost all different departments of the school. In June 2014 Janina was also appointed as Data Protection Officer at BIS.
Janina and her boyfriend Thomas, who relocated from Frankfurt with her, enjoy escaping to the Alps in their spare time. During the cold months, snowboarding is their passion and during the summer they travel all over Europe trying out new paragliding hotspots.

Athletics Director

Phil Drake has been working overseas in International Schools for 18 years. He served his last post as Director of Sport, Extra-Curricular Activities and Trips Coordinator at the British International School, HCMC, Vietnam for 9 years. Phil has a joint degree in Sociology & Psychology, a degree in Sports Science and PGCE. Before a career change into education, Phil trained as an accountant.

Phil has been working at the Bavarian International School since August 2015. He has recently joined the BIS Leadership team with responsibility as whole school Athletics Director and After School Activities coordinator.

Phil has 2 young children (Alfie and Polly) who both currently attend the Haimhausen Primary Campus. His wife Emma Jane Morris is the IB CAS Coordinator and also inspires many young musicians teaching various brass instruments and piano. She also conducts the local Haimhausen Dorfmusik wind orchestra!

In his spare time Phil enjoys traveling with his family, camping, cooking, running, cycling, swimming and snowboarding. He recently completed the Maratona dles Dolomites a 140km road bike race including 7 mountain passes and 4.200 meters of climbing! He comes from an International background (his mum being an Armenian born in Iran) and previous to moving to Germany enjoyed a decade of exploring and scuba diving South East Asia. He also plays the guitar!

Head of Communications & Public Affairs

Marko Mädge took over the development and leadership of the department for Communications, Public Affairs and Fundraising at Bavarian International School gAG (BIS) in January 2019. He is BIS's media spokesman. His primary goals include the implementation of consistent communication and thus a positive awareness, image and reputation. Also on his agenda is the development of fundraising & sponsoring and the establishment of effective digital communication.
Born in Braunschweig, Germany, Marko Mädge studied journalism and sports science at the University of Leipzig and worked as an editor, media spokesman and consultant. From 1999 to mid-2017 he developed a journalism office into an agency for communications, content and corporate publishing with 18 employees, most recently as managing partner.
In his private life, the father of a little son naturally focuses on his family. He is also interested in minimalistic photography, urban & street art, city trips and tennis.

Head of Human Resources

Veronika Märkl is a native of Munich, a city that she has never grown tired of. She is a real Munich fan who loves the lifestyle, traditions, and cultural offerings of the city, as well as the proximity to Austria, Italy, Switzerland and France.
During her training for a career in the hotel industry she concentrated on the area of Human Resources and Labour Law. Upon completing her studies, she went to work for the Arabella/Sheraton Hotels, where she spent 15 years, and was promoted to the position of Area Personnel Manager for eight Bavarian hotels. In 2002 Veronika Märkl joined BIS, where she assumed the role of Head of Human Resources.
Veronika has a son who graduated from BIS in 2012. She enjoys skiing, biking, inline skating, travelling, reading and spending time with family and friends.
