Welcome to BIS Secondary School Grades 6 to 12
At BIS Secondary School we combine an appreciation for our host country’s cultural heritage with modern educational practice creating a space for inspirational learning.
Learning is at the heart of everything we do in the Secondary School and our dedicated teachers work collaboratively with our students, each other and the parent community to enhance individual and collective knowledge and ensure each young person is given the opportunity to do their best’. It is this sense of belonging and ownership that underpins our mission to inspire and challenge young minds as a caring, committed international community to achieve excellence, assume responsibility and pursue ‘Weltverbesserer’ as global citizens.
The Secondary School is structured so that special attention and emphasis is given to the distinct areas of educational development that our young secondary students experience. Grades 6 to 8 and Grades 9 to 12 are the two pedagogical spheres in which the school operates. In the Grades 6-8 section, junior students are transitioned into their secondary school years and begin the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP 1,2, 3). In the Grades 9-12 section the senior students complete their IB Middle Years programme (MYP 4, 5) and undertake either their IB Diploma or IB Career-related Programme journey to become fully prepared for life outside BIS. Graduates traditionally progress to their universities and undergraduate courses of choice, including many of the top universities around the world.
The German federal Kultusminister Konferenz (KMK) have formally agreed equivalency between the MYP and the German Mittleren Schulabschluss (Mittlere Reife), and the DP and the Abitur. Further details can be found on the KMK's website.
Our three world class education programmes provide a broad, balanced and globally recognized curriculum that ensures that all students have the opportunity to develop interests and abilities no matter where their individual strengths may lie. Our commitment to international education is reflected in our languages programme that offers English, German, French, Spanish, Chinese and Japanese (as well as 16 mother tongue study opportunities) and our unique Newcomer Centre to enhance young learners in Grades 6 to 8 who are new to an English language medium education. We have an extensive pastoral programme that ensures that all student needs are cared and catered for, be they academic, social and personal. We provide state of the art technology to all students through our ‘one to one’ laptop and i-Pad programmes and the skills and competencies to access this technology in a meaningful and safe way.
Students have the opportunity to take part in out exciting After School Activity programmes (ASA) as well as in-school initiatives such as the Model United Nations, BIS Chronicle Journalism club, Student Council, Green Team, Student Ambassadors and the robotics club- to name but a few. Our innovative and burgeoning Service as Action and CAS programmes are well established and enable our young people to develop the skills to become active, responsible 21st century citizens.
The BIS Secondary School really is a wonderful and unique place in which to learn and thrive. We look forward to another successful, memorable and dynamic academic year.
