DIRECTOR

Dr. Chrissie Sorenson was born in the USA and grew up on the beautiful Monterey Peninsula in California. She holds a

doctorate in Educational Leadership from the University of San Diego, an MBA in International Management from the Monterey Institute of International Studies and a Bachelor’s in German from the University of California, Davis.

Raised as a typical Third Culture Kid (TCK) - mother is German, father is Canadian – she feels most at home in a multi­cultural environment and has raised her family to do the same. Chrissie is married and has three children. Her two older children have both graduated with IB Diplomas, with one having finished his studies in the UK and the other studying in Australia. Her youngest son, Dirk, is in the BIS primary school in Haimhausen, and particularly likes swimming, math and books. After 20 years as a General Contractor, her husband, Darin, has his own business as a Handyman for ex-pats.

Education has always been a priority for Chrissie, and continues to be as she goes into her 17th year of leading international schools in both the US and Germany. To maintain balance, she enjoys swimming, yoga, reading and most of all, spending quality time with her family.

BUSINESS DIRECTOR

Marco Dahl joined BIS in July 2006 relocating from northern Germany’s Düsseldorf region. He studied Economics and gathered work experience all over Germany until he found his home with BIS.

Starting to support the Accounting/Controlling Department at BIS he established a strong relationship with the schools at BIS and became a responsible team member together with the Principals in planning the whole school Timetable. He also became the contact person for all government related issues and got involved in most areas around and within the school. In 2009 Marco joined the BIS Leadership Team as Financial & Educational Services Controller.

Marco enjoys travelling around the world and is proud member of a small social project running a Kindergarten/Pre-­School in the Gambia, West Africa.

PRIMARY SCHOOL - PRINCIPAL CITY CAMPUS

Kathy Slocombe joined the BIS leadership team in August 2008 when she was appointed as the Primary School Principal at the Haimhausen Campus. In August 2015 Kathy moved to the new City Campus where she is the founding principal of the new Primary School.

Kathy originally comes from the south of England and studied her Bachelor of Education with Honours degree for primary teaching in London, qualifying in 1990. She joined the BIS team after four years in Tanzania where her position was Head of Primary at the International School Moshi. Kathy also taught in the UK, New Zealand, The Netherlands and Spain before joining BIS in Germany. This is her third Primary Principal position.

Kathy is married to Chris and their daughter Emily attends the BRIT School in London where she is studying Musical Theatre. She also has (much older) twins with her daughter being in the New Zealand Air Force and her son in the final year of a Paediatric nursing Degree at Canterbury University in the UK. Kathy enjoys playing tennis, reading, music and travel. She lives in central Munich and owns a house on the Costa Blanca in Spain where she enjoys the opportunity to relax by the pool and read!

PRIMARY SCHOOL - PRINCIPAL HAIMHAUSEN CAMPUS

Angela Hölzl is the Principal of the Primary School. She first joined BIS in 2004 as a Grade 3 classroom teacher and has been actively involved in the Primary School curriculum development ever since. In 2004 she also became an official IBPYP workshop leader and moved into the position of Assistant Principal/Curriculum Coordinator in 2006. Angela has gone on to facilitate in­school workshops, regional workshops and participate in school visits throughout the Europe, Africa and Middle East region, as well as develop curriculum documents for the International Baccalaureate Organisation.

Angela is well accustomed to living in Munich having previously worked at Munich International School and being married to Hubert, who is a native Bavarian. She has two children, Laura and Alexander and both children are bilingual. Originally Angela comes from Manchester in England and first came to live in the Munich area in 2001.

She studied for her Bachelor of Education with Honours in Liverpool and went on to teach in an inner city school in Manchester before moving to Germany. Since then she has completed a Masters degree in Educational Leadership. After 9 years of “on the job” training, in August 2015, she took on the role of Primary Principal at the Haimhausen Campus.

PRIMARY SCHOOL - DEPUTY PRINCIPAL HAIMHAUSEN CAMPUS/ PYP CURRICULUM COORDINATOR

Annette Austin joined our team from South Africa where she was Principal of a small International school for which she attained IBPYP accreditation.

In her educational journey Annette has taught both in South Africa and at various educational institutions in Germany including 5 years at MIS. She has been a PYP Co­-ordinator, is a team member visiting PYP schools seeking accreditation and acts as a consultant for the IB to a number of candidate PYP schools.

Annette is married to John and their youngest daughter is a student at BIS in the Primary School. Her 2 older daughters both have BComm degrees and are working in South Africa.

Annette has a passion for baking and loves exploring Bavaria on her bicycle with her family as well as all the other exciting adventures living in Bavaria and Europe holds.

She believes in raising well rounded, balanced individuals where there is a real commitment to nurturing, moulding and sculpting each child and looks forward to working together with a team of professionals to achieve this.

PRIMARY SCHOOL - DEPUTY PRINCIPAL CITY CAMPUS/ PYP CURRICULUM COORDINATOR

Jacqueline Harmer joins BIS as Deputy Principal and PYP curriculum co-­ordinator for the city campus. She has 12 years experience with the IB Primary Years Programme most recently as a curriculum manager at the IB office in The Hague.

Jacqueline originally comes from a very small village in Norfolk, England. She studied her Bachelor of Education with Honours degree in Chester. She also has a Masters in International Education from Bath University. She has been working internationally since 1997 and has taught in Spain, North Carolina, Mexico and Hong Kong. She also spent two years in Bangladesh as a volunteer in the role of education advisor to 145,000 non-­formal primary schools.

Jacqueline is a workshop leader for the IB as well as a school visitor. She is also a member of the IB PYP Building Quality Curriculum team. She is a keen baker and enjoys dancing and photography. Jacqueline is a passionate traveller and enjoys exploring locally and around the globe.

SECONDARY SCHOOL - PRINCIPAL

John Barker joined BIS in August 2014 as the Secondary School Principal. He has a wealth of international teaching and leadership experience having spent the past fourteen years working in Taiwan, Hong Kong and Denmark.

John was born in the Bahamas but spent his formative years in the distinctly different environment of the North East of England. He is married to Carole and has two daughters, Alice (joining Grade 4) and Kate (joining Grade 1).

John is a keen musician who enjoys playing the guitar, banjo, ukulele and drums. He also enjoys a range of sporting pursuits including running the occasional marathon, cycling and volleyball. He is an ardent advocate of enabling students to fulfil their academic potential whilst actively engaging in a broad range of extra-curricular activities. John looks forward to working with all stakeholders of the BIS community to ensure and celebrate ongoing educational excellence and a collegial sense of passion, positivity and purpose.

SECONDARY SCHOOL - DEPUTY PRINCIPAL (ACADEMIC)

Brett Meuli is the Deputy Principal (Academic) of the Secondary School. This involves setting key expectations for and supporting the staff and students in the academic programmes at BIS. Brett ensures that our IB Middle Years Programme, IB Diploma and High School Diploma are both rigorous and engaging and he develops systems and processes to support these programmes.

Brett joined the BIS leadership team in 2010 as Middle School Assistant Principal and MYP Coordinator having previously held a variety of leadership and teaching posts in New Zealand, Singapore and Indonesia. Brett has a Bachelor of Arts in History and an Associate Degree in Social Sciences. He has worked extensively for the IB in the Asia/Pacific and Africa/Europe regions as a workshop leader, moderator, consultant and schools visitor. Originally from New Plymouth in New Zealand, Brett is happily married to Julie and away from school he enjoys football, biking, reading, fitness, travel and anything to do with consumer electronics.

SECONDARY SCHOOL - DEPUTY PRINCIPAL (PASTORAL)

Rohan Skene joined BIS in August 2009 as a teacher of economics and has had various roles in the senior leadership team including IGCSE Coordinator, IB Diploma programme coordinator and Assistant Principal culminating in his appointment this year as the Secondary Deputy Principal­-Pastoral. He holds an important role as facilitating and leading the Secondary school pastoral team and pastoral programme. He is focused on ensuring an effective balance is promoted between high expectations of academic focus and behaviours as well as high levels of support for our wonderful students.

Rohan has Bachelors in Economics and Commerce, a Graduate Diploma in Education, a Masters of Arts and a total of 22 years-­experience as an educator in Australia, the UK and Germany. He is presently completing research into student voice and the curriculum as the focus for his Doctor of Education thesis. Rohan is married to Julia (a native German) has three children Holly, Eliza and Leon. He appreciates the cultural, sporting and festive aspects of Munich life.

SECONDARY SCHOOL - MYP COORDINATOR

Ana Gonçalves joined BIS in August 2012 as a Head of Department for Language acquisition French, Spanish and Chinese. In August 2015 she joined the senior leadership team, assuming the role of MYP Coordinator. Her main role as MYP coordinator is to be responsible for the effective organization of the IB MYP curriculum program to support staff and students. As MYP coordinator she is involved in the whole­school implementation of the MYP and, therefore, has a central function in the organization of the programme. The MYP coordinator maintains contact with area leaders, subject departments and teachers, and with the IB.

Ana has a Bachelors degree in English and American civilization and literature, a Graduate Diploma in Education and started a Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership and Administration. She has 13 years of experience as an educator and is starting her fourth year here at BIS.

Ana speaks four languages fluently which are French, English, Spanish and Portuguese. She loves traveling, reading and martial arts. She is very much looking forward to sharing common values with the BIS community and have experience in applying the MYP curriculum so that it contributes to the development of lifetime empowerment and learning.

SECONDARY SCHOOL - IB DIPLOMA COORDINATOR

Loay Malek joined BIS in August 2013 as a teacher of mathematics and the Pastoral Leader for grades 11 and 12. In August 2015 he joined the senior leadership team, assuming the role of Diploma Program Coordinator. His main role as IB Diploma Coordinator involves the support and mentoring of all IB Diploma students. To this end he works to ensure that they have a balanced set of subjects, which reflect their strengths, with a view to their future careers. He also administers the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program as a whole.

Loay has Bachelors degree in Aeronautical Engineering, a Graduate Diploma in Education, a Masters of Education in Educational Management and Leadership, and brings a total of twenty years experience as an educator to BIS.

Loay is married to Nadine (Mathematics Head of Department at BIS), and has two daughters currently enrolled at BIS. He appreciates the school ethos and strives, along with the entire school community, to articulate authentic learning practices that will enable BIS graduates to develop well beyond their years within our school.

HEAD OF STUDENT SUPPORT SERVICES

Emily Cole-­Chu serves as the Head of Student Support Services here at BIS. She works across the whole school to oversee Counselling and Learning Support and also works in concert with the English as an Additional Language department. Originally from California, Emily joined BIS in 2013 as the Head of Counselling. One of the many highlights of her days here at BIS is greeting the kids in the morning outside.

She graduated from Antioch University in Keene, New Hampshire with a Master’s of Arts in Marriage and Family Therapy. She previously worked at a college preparatory boarding school and at a child and family therapy unit of psychiatric clinic in Connecticut. Emily has also taught psychology and wellness.

Prior to her career in the academic and counselling world, Emily earned her Bachelor of Arts in Art History and Studio Art from Occidental College in Los Angeles, California. After graduation, she worked as a Fundraising and Public Programs Manager in New York City until changing directions to help people more directly through counselling and working with students.

Emily is an avid runner who coaches both Cross-­Country and Track and Field at BIS. She is an extremely frequent traveler, loves to cook gluten­free food, is a cheerfully slow Alpine skier, and regularly heads out for mountain hikes.

DIRECTOR OF CONTINUUM LEARNING

Adrian von Wrede-Jervis has been with BIS in a senior leadership capacity since 2009. Currently he is the Director of Continuum Learning, which is a whole school role that works to establish curriculum continuity across our three programmes (PYP, MYP and DP). His role is ensure that we, at BIS, progressively develop the best thinking and learning skills as your child moves through the school; the end outcome being that each child emerges as a fully rounded IB student, who is willing to inquire about the world around them, think about issues from a conceptual basis, evaluate problems using multidisciplinary skills (honed in each discipline that they study) and above all graduate as an internationally minded citizen of the world. Additional to this role he coordinates the Theory of Knowledge (TOK) course that is delivered in the DP programme.

Originally from the UK, a chemistry graduate from Leeds University, he has built most of his teaching experience in the Essex and Southend­-on-­Sea area where latterly he was Director of the Science Faculty in a grammar school, he has also taught in Estonia and South Africa. He is married to Ulrike (who is a German Namibian), and has two young sons, Danik and Xander. In his free time he loves camping, hill walking and bird watching (though he is more of a birder than a twitcher).

HEAD OF HUMAN RESOURCES

Veronika Märkl is a native of Munich, a city that she has never grown tired of. She is a real Munich fan who loves the lifestyle, traditions, and cultural offerings of the city, as well as the proximity to Austria, Italy, Switzerland and France.

During her training for a career in the hotel industry she concentrated on the area of Human Resources and Labour Law. Upon completing her studies, she went to work for the Arabella/Sheraton Hotels, where she spent 15 years, and was promoted to the position of Area Personnel Manager for eight Bavarian hotels. In 2002 Veronika Märkl joined BIS, where she assumed the role of Head of Human Resources.

Veronika has a son who graduated from BIS in 2012. She enjoys skiing, biking, inline skating, travelling, reading and spending time with family and friends.

HEAD OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY

Kevin Skidmore has been working at BIS since November of 2005. In 2012 he joined the BIS leadership team with responsibilty for the Campus IT Infrastructure and Instructional Technology.

Kevin is an American who has found a new home in Germany along with his wife Maureen who teaches at BIS, and their three children Anna, Julie, and James who were all born in Munich.

Prior to joining BIS Kevin has held technology leadership roles at a variety of both large and small companies and most recently at a financial services startup in Atlanta Georgia. In his spare time Kevin enjoys travelling around Europe, biking, and playing guitar and bass.

SENIOR FINANCIAL CONTROLLER

Janina Peters was born in Frankfurt and relocated to Munich in 2008 after finishing her studies in Wiesbaden with a LLM in Business Law degree. During her first profession at one of the big four auditing companies, she was part of the auditing team at BIS, which is how she got to know this exciting and so different work place compared to the “industry”.

In May 2013 Janina joined BIS as the Senior Financial Controller, being involved and working together with almost all different departments of the school. In June 2014 Janina was also appointed as Data Protection Officer at BIS.

Janina and her boyfriend Thomas, who relocated from Frankfurt with her, enjoy escaping to the Alps in their spare time. During the cold months, snowboarding is their passion and during the summer they travel all over Europe trying out new paragliding hotspots.
