Win friends and impress your family by learning basic Chinese (including ordering from the local Chinese takeaway) Learn to differentiate between the four tones so you don't call a say a plant is your mum and your mum is a horse! Find out the story behind the Chinese zodiac. Get a Chinese name. Try a different side of your brain. Due to its pictorial writing system, Chinese uses a different side of the brain to European languages. Plus there's no tenses, no genders (no more: der, die, das; le,la, les; or el, la, los, las...) and no pesky accents to remember. Chinese is so easy! Unlock the mysteries of one of the oldest languages in the world - at over 6,000 years old the Chinese language is one of the most ancient writing systems in the world. Being able to understand it opens up the culture of one of the oldest civilizations, including Confucianism, Buddhism, feng shui, fireworks, martial arts, cuisine, calligraphy and the lunar calendar. Plus don't forget these facts: A quarter of the world's population speaks Chinese (not only in mainland China, but in Taiwan, Singapore, South East Asia, and increasingly in Chinese communities in North America and Europe.) China is widely regarded as the potentially biggest global market in the twenty-first century with the fastest growing economy in the world. Initial academic research and classroom discussions will be followed by viewing documentaries and featured films dealing with the issue.
