The Bavarian International School e.V was established in 1991 as a non-profit association (eingetragener Verein) to serve the international community of the Munich area. The school offers an excellent quality education with English as the principal language of instruction. BIS is governed by a Board of Trustees and is accredited by the Council of International Schools (CIS) and the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC). There are 700 students attending BIS from over 40 different countries, with 42 students in the graduating class. The major nationalities represented in the school are American (22%) German (20%) and British (18%). The three school sections of BIS are the Lower School (Pre-Reception - grade 5) with 348 students; Middle School (grades six - eight) with 152 students; and Upper School (grades 9 - 12) with 200 students. The Lower School is authorized to teach the Primary Years Programme (PYP) of the International Baccalaureate Organisation. BIS has been authorized to administer the IB Diploma Programme since 1995. The school strongly encourages and supports all Upper School students who possess the necessary aptitude and motivation to complete the requirements of the IB Diploma Programme in Grades 11-12. There is an extensive extra-curricula programme at BIS which includes sports teams, student government and Model United Nations, clubs and musical and drama productions. Students are encouraged to make the most of the leadership and participation opportunities provided by the Student Council. The school is constantly seeking other positive avenues for student involvement, including student assemblies, clubs, artistic performance, international public speaking, European Student Forum and peer support programmes. |
