Early 2009 the School’s long serving Business Director will be retiring. The Board of BIS is seeking a replacement for this important position. Contact Human Resouces / Send Application and Info The School The Bavarian International School is an independent, co-educational day school established in 1991 as a non-profit Association (e.V.). BIS is located on a self-contained purpose built campus on the northern outskirts of Munich. The school currently enrols 700 students in Pre-Reception (4 year olds) to Grade 12. These students are drawn from 41 different countries with 18% from the United Kingdom, 22% from the United States and 4% from Japan. Approximately 20% of the students speak German as their mother tongue and either hold German nationality or regard Germany as their home country. Faculty is drawn from 17 different countries. The School is recognised and supported by the Bavarian Ministry of Education and has been accredited with both the European Council of International Schools (ECIS) and the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC). Growth and Development The school has experienced steady growth in recent years. The school is now implementing plans for facilities and curriculum development, which would allow the school to serve the needs of a student population of up to 800. Economically, Bavaria is experiencing good growth and many international companies are opening branches in the Munich area. The School Facilities BIS moved to its current campus in August 1998. The School occupies five main buildings on a single site in the village of Haimhausen, some 10 kilometres north of the Munich City boundary. It is situated in beautifully landscaped parklands and surrounded by environmentally protected woodlands. The Schloss The Schloss, which forms the impressive centrepiece of the BIS campus has a rich history stretching back to the late 1500s. The building features a number of architectural treasures, and has been the home of three significant Bavarian families over the years. The Bavarian International School purchased the property in 1997. After a year of re-modelling and the construction of additional purpose-built educational facilities, BIS opened for its first school year in Schloss Haimhausen in September 1998. Today the Schloss provides classroom space and a cafeteria for the Upper School (grades 9–12), and houses the offices of the Director, the Upper School Principal, the ICT Department and various other administrative offices. There are currently 200 students in the Upper School. The Modern Buildings A number of purpose built modern buildings have been added to the campus, to provide the range of facilities required for a high-quality Pre-Reception to Grade 12 international school. Lower School This 24 room classroom complex was completed in January 2007. All rooms in this new three storey complex open off of a central atrium which fills the building with natural light. Designed to harmonise in style with the existing modern additions, this newest building provides a new library for Lower and Middle School students, a state-of-the-art ICT lab, science laboratories, two music rooms, EAL and learning support rooms, and offices for the Lower School Principal and Deputy Principal. There are currently 340 students in the Lower School. Middle School The Middle School building was built in 1997, and consists of 24 spacious classrooms, with views to the outside grounds through the large, wall-sized windows. The classrooms are home for the students in grades 6-8. On the top floor there are well designed and equipped facilities for the teaching of Physics, Chemistry, and Biology for Upper School students, and General Science for Middle School students. The offices of the Middle School Principal and the Middle and Upper School Counsellor are on the ground floor of this building. There are currently 160 students in the Middle School. Performing Arts The Performing Arts Centre opened in fall 2003 and features a 510 seat theatre with acoustics, lighting and sound facilities ideally suited for musical and drama performances. The performance centre is equipped for a range of technical applications, including wireless computer access, electronic data presentations and computer-based music. A large, flexible music classroom is located just off of the upper level viewing gallery. The theatre is the site of weekly student assemblies, seminars, presentations and PTO gatherings. The large, airy entrance foyer in front of the theatre provides an ideal surrounding for festive post- performances receptions, exhibitions, and special school events. Large events benefit from the proximity of the attractive and spacious cafeteria and exhibition space along with washroom facilities, all located just off the foyer. The Upper School Library The top floor of the central pavilion, linked to both the Schloss and the Lower School building by an enclosed glass walkway, is the location of the Upper School library. In addition to the fiction and non-fiction book collections, the library provides an immensely rich and varied electronic research capability, accessed by means of the numerous computers located around the facility. This functional building also features delightful views over the park-like school grounds from its panoramic windows. The lower floor of the pavilion houses a staff kitchen and workroom and a conference room. Sports Hall This light, attractive and spacious area provides indoor sporting and Physical Education facilities for the school. It supports the teaching and playing of a range of sports including basketball, volleyball and badminton, and features a comprehensive climbing wall, a separate large area for Health and Fitness, a large viewing gallery, and storage for the large range of equipment and support materials. The Sports Hall is also used for activities offered in the Enrichment Programme, and is frequently used by outside groups within the Haimhausen community. A state of the art 400 meter athletic track and a second purpose built sportsfield was completed in September of this year. School Governance BIS was founded under German law as a Verein or Association. All parents automatically belong to the Association and elect a seven-member Board which is ultimately responsible for the School. The Business Director, who reports directly to the Board, works closely with the School Director and the Senior Management Team, which is comprised of the Principals of the Lower, Middle and Upper Schools and the Head of Human Resources. BIS enjoys the support of a very active Parent Teacher Organisation, which sponsors many events and activities, which in turn help create a lively sense of community. The PTO plays an important role in encouraging good communication throughout the school and community. The Educational Programme The school offers an international curriculum based on the programmes of the International Baccalaureate Organisation. Students in grades 11 and 12 are prepared for the IB Diploma. The IB Primary Years Programme has been developed in the primary school and the IGCSE is currently being offered to Grade 9 & 10 students. BIS has received authorisation for the IBPYP in 2002. Each of the IB and IGCSE programmes has its own Co-ordinator. The Middle Years Programme at the Bavarian International School consists of an internal Middle Years Programme for students in Grades 6-8. English is the language of instruction and all students learn German. French, Spanish and Japanese are also taught in the secondary school. Faculty and Administration BIS have a total of 90 employees. This includes 60 fulltime teachers, 10 part-time teachers and an administrative/support staff of 20. The faculty is drawn from 17 countries. The School Director Under its current Director, BIS has experienced further expansion in student population and improved facilities. BIS is also in the process of updating its full accreditation from both ECIS and NEASC, received in 2002. The appointed Business Director, who reports directly to the Board, will cooperate very closely with the School Director who has the responsibility of managing the academic school activities. Qualifications The Board seeks to appoint a long-term Business Director who is a team player experienced in finance, data management and business administration. The successful candidate should provide continuity and innovation in the school’s pursuit of excellence and fiscal stability. The Board expects the Business Director to build upon the important relationships already forged with those local, national and international communities and organisations, with which the school works. Fluency in German is essential maintaining these, and expanding new relationships at both corporate, community and governmental levels. It is ideal for an energetic communicator, keen to build on the firm foundations and to work with an international community and an experienced, professional Board in beautiful surroundings.
