Structure

The Bavarian International School was established in 1990 to offer an English medium education to children from the international community in the north of Munich. The school opened officially on February 19, 1991 offering Pre-school to Grade 1 with only 6 students and one teacher, Ms. Pam Sonntag. The following year classes from Pre-school to Grade 5 opened, adding classes each year until reaching the milestone of its first graduating class of 17 students in 1997.

In August 1998 the school moved from its start up location in office block buildings in Schwaig to a beautiful permanent home in Haimhausen.  Set in a green and peaceful park-like environment, the impressive and historic mansion known as Schloß Haimhausen was stairs_schlossrenovated and adapted into classrooms and offices for the Upper School, and adjacent modern, purpose-built facilities to house lower school classrooms, science rooms, a library, and a sport hall were added.
The school's current enrolment of 690 students represents over 40 nationalities, with approximately 40 students in the graduating class.

BIS separates its daily operation and curriculum delivery into three sections, namely:

The Lower School: Grades Pre Reception (age 4) - Grade 5

  • Early Years: Pre-Reception to Grade 2
  • Junior Years: Grades 3 to 5
  • Maximum class sizes: Pre-Reception: 18; Reception: 22; Grades 1 - 5: 24

The Middle School: Grades 6-8

  • Maximum class size: 24

The Upper School: Grades 9-12

  • Maximum class size: 24

A number of over-arching structures bind us together as one school in reality. These are as follows:

  • The Director's whole school role
  • The Business Manager's whole school role
  • The Library Department
  • The Student Counselor
  • The Learning Support Team
  • The Athletics Department
  • The Enrichment Programme

Organisation

The Director works closely with the principals in the operation of the educational programme, and in connection with staff, students, parents and community, and with the Deputy Director in the area of administration and support systems.

The BIS Leadership Team comprises the Director, the Deputy Director, and the three principals. The team meets regularly and frequently to ensure smooth and consistent operation of the school.

The Lower School Principal is assisted by the Lower School Assistant Principal. Together they supervise the implementation of the BIS curriculum in line with the PYP curriculum and curriculum framework. They also provide professional development and encourage their teachers to lead professional development for each other in weekly staff meetings.

The Upper School Principal meets regularly with the Upper School staff members. Subject Leaders in the Upper School form the Upper School Curriculum Council. The Subject Leaders work on a daily basis with the teachers in their particular curriculum areas, as follows:

  • English / Language Arts
  • English as an Additional Language (EAL)
  • Mathematics
  • Science
  • Humanities
  • The Arts
