THE SCHLOSS

thegrounds.jpg Our Upper School classrooms are situated in the Schloss, the castle that forms the impressive centrepiece of the BIS campus. With a rich history stretching back to the late 1500s, the building features a number of architectural treasures and has been the home of three significant Bavarian families over the years. Today, students in grades 9-12 climb the wide wooden stairs to classrooms that were once bedrooms, sitting rooms or perhaps a banquet hall or ballroom. Up under the eaves is the art atelier, an exciting place where easels compete with mannequins, computers and a kiln for floor space. Tucked away in a wing one floor down is an excellent ICT studio and on the ground floor, the Upper School cafeteria now occupies the area of what was formerly the main carriage entrance to the castle. With vaulted ceilings and direct access to the Schloss park and fountain, the cafeteria is open from 8:00am – 4:30 pm, and is a popular meeting place for parents as well as students.

THE MODERN BUILDINGS

Beginning in 1997, a number of modern buildings were constructed adjoining the Schloss, to provide the range of facilities required for a high-quality Pre-Reception to Grade 12 international school.

Middle School

modern1-small This building consists of 24 spacious classrooms, with views to the outside grounds through the large, wall-sized windows. On the top floor are well-designed and equipped facilities for the teaching of Physics, Chemistry and Biology. In heavy demand for the teaching of Upper School science, these laboratories are also used for the teaching of General Science for Middle School students. The classrooms on the ground floor are home to students in Pre-Reception and Reception. The rest of the classrooms house our Middle School and provide facilities for English as an Additional Language (EAL), and German language classes. The Middle School principal and our nurses have their offices on the ground floor of this building.

Lower School

The Lower School is located in our newest classroom complex, which was completed in December, 2006. The building was conceived as a link between the Middle School building and the sports hall. 18 roomy classrooms are grouped around a central atrium which serves as a bright, inviting meeting area. The building also houses a middle school science laboratory, a computer lab, a K-8 library with a story-telling room, an ICT lab, two music rooms and a variety of offices and support and meeting rooms.

Sports Hall

sports-small This light, attractive and spacious area provides indoor sporting and Physical Education facilities for the school. It supports the teaching and practice of a range of sports including basketball, volleyball and badminton and features a climbing wall, a separate large area for Health and Fitness, a large viewing gallery, and plenty storage space for equipment and support materials. The Sports Hall is also used for activities offered in the Enrichment Programme, and by outside groups within the Haimhausen community.

Libraries

The top floor of the central pavilion, linked to both the Schloss and the Lower School building by an enclosed glass walkway, is the location of the Senior Library (grades 9 - 12). In addition to the fiction and non-fiction book collection for Upper School, the library provides an immensely rich and varied electronic research capability, accessed by means of the numerous computers located around the facility. The Senior Library also features delightful views over the park-like school grounds from its panoramic windows.  A Junior Library (Pre-Reception - grade 8) is located in the newly completed classroom complex, and includes a story-telling room, computer work stations and a spacious reading and study area.

Performing Arts

The Performing Arts Centre opened in fall 2003 and features a 510 seat theatre with accoustics, lighting and sound facilities ideally suited for musical and drama performances. The performance centre is equipped for a range of technical applications, including wireless computer access, for electronic data presentations and computer-based music. This facility provides the school with much-needed space in which to hold student assemblies and a variety of gatherings including seminars, presentations and graduation. Right outside the theatre is an attractive and spacious cafeteria and exhibition spaces, ideal for receptions after performances or school events, and a beloved meeting place for parents during the school day. Our Newly Built Lower School

Click on the photos below to get a closer look at our beautiful new classroom building. The building’s architect, Phillip Capeller, designed it with the belief that “the best buildings are the ones in which the users feel comfortable …and where interesting rooms develop on a human standard”.

Since our teachers and students moved into the new facility in January, 2007, the response has been unanimous: this building is a dream! The rooms are bright and spacious, with spectacular views over the back fields. A bright, light-flooded atrium is the communicative centre of the building. The warm coloured, wooden surfaces of the furniture match well with the bright flooring and the lightweight handrails of the atrium, in the centre of which a curving stairway winds its way up to the upstairs classroooms.

Our Sports Field

The new sports field has been integrated into an extensive, landscaped park.  The field itself measures 105m x 68m, and offers areas for triple and long jump, discus and shot-put, high jump, as well as a basket and volleyball field. The track is made up of 8 lanes over a distance of 100m, and 6 lanes for 400m.

New Sports Field The new sports field, completed in September 2007, is situated within a conservation and flood protection area, and is therefore surrounded by a compensation area including retention faces, amphibian ponds and habitats for flora and fauna.
