Welcome to the Middle School at BIS. Perhaps one of the most important roles we have as educators and parents is to guide our children through their educational journey. We all know that middle school children are at a point in their journey where they are experiencing a host of changes associated with the transition from childhood to adolescence. Therefore, it is critically important that we offer an educational programme that recognizes these changes and supports and nurtures the intellectual, social, emotional and physical development of adolescent children.

The broad aim of the Middle School and the mission of the Bavarian International School are one in the same:To inspire young minds and challenge young individuals to achieve their intellectual and personal potential within a caring international environment. To achieve this aim, we provide students with a broad and balanced international curriculum with a strong academic foundation that promotes intercultural awareness and supports and nurtures the physical, social and emotional development of adolescent children. The curriculum consists of the study and the exploration of Arts/Performing Arts (Art and Design, Drama and Music), Humanities (Business Studies, History and Geography), Information and Communications Technology, Language A (English, German, Japanese), Language B (German, French, Spanish), English as a Second Language, Mathematics, Personal and Social Education, Physical Education/Sports Science and Science (Biology, Chemistry, Physics). Support services are available for students in need. Non-native speakers of English who have a limited understanding of the English language will receive EAL support to help them acquire the academic English language skills necessary to be successful in the Middle School Programme. Students who have been identified with specific learning differences will receive Learning Support to help them acquire the necessary skills and the strategies to cope with an academic programme. Through homerooms and our Personal and Social Education Programme, we aim to provide a nurturing environment and guide our students in the exploration of a range of issues related to their health and personal development.

We also encourage our students to look beyond themselves and become involved in service activities that benefit others in the BIS community and beyond. All of our middle years students have an opportunity to participate in an overnight trip programme that addresses the theme: Team building and problem solving through physical and intellectual challenge. During the school year, students have opportunities to participate in a wide variety of extra-curricular activities as well which include sport, scouts, drama, computers, digital media, art, music (band), homework club, etc. Ultimately, we want our students to emerge from our Middle School Programme as creative, confident, and caring individuals equipped with the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to learn how to learn to realize the consequences of the choices they make. The partnership between school and family is essential to the success of the Middle School student. We welcome parent involvement, and we are always looking to tap into parent energy and expertise to enhance our programme.

Sincerely
