avarian International School is an international learning community intent on inspiring young minds and challenging young individuals to achieve their intellectual and personal potential within a caring international environment.  We aim to encourage students to become active, compassionate and life long learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right.

As a learning community we are a school where all (students, staff and parents) are committed to their own learning and supporting the learning of others. Through our curriculum at BIS, aligned with the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme, the Middle Years Programme and the Diploma Programme, we want to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. In order to achieve this we provide a curriculum which compels teachers and educational leaders to think deeply about their own practice with regards to student learning and continuous school development.  Each learner is provided with the opportunity to construct meaning and be involved in each step of the teaching and learning process.

We are committed to providing an international programme that meets the needs of students from all nations, serving the multinational community of greater Munich and its surrounding areas. Located in the heritage setting of Schloss Haimhausen, BIS offers the security of established structure and curriculum, combined with contemporary, dynamic and innovative educational practice, focused on the development of the whole child. Our highly-qualified and skilled professional staff represents more than fifteen nationalities. Our student age range (from 4 - 18 years old) enhances the sense of community, and our size enables us to maintain close and valued links with the members of our school community.

When our students leave BIS, we want them to stride into the world of further education and employment well qualified, skilled and equipped to handle the challenges of the international world in which they will live, learn, serve and work. We welcome your active participation in making this vision a reality.

The Bavarian International School e.V was established in 1991 as a non-profit association (eingetragener Verein) to serve the international community of the Munich area. The school offers an excellent quality education with English as the principal language of instruction.

BIS is governed by a Board of Trustees and is accredited by the Council of International Schools (CIS) and the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC).

There are 756 students attending BIS from over 43 different countries, speaking 28 languages. In 2009 – 2010 we will have 47 students in the graduating class. The major nationalities represented in the school are American, British, German, Italian and Spanish. The three school sections of BIS are the Lower School (Pre-Reception - grade 5) with 375 students; Middle School (grades six - eight) with 172 students; and Upper School (grades 9 - 12) with 209 students.

The Lower School is authorized to teach the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (PYP) and in August 2009 the Middle School begins the implementation of the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme as a candidate school.

BIS has been authorized to administer the IB Diploma Programme since 1995. The school strongly encourages and supports all Upper School students who possess the necessary aptitude and motivation to complete the requirements of the IB Diploma Programme in Grades 11-12. In addition the school currently offers the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) Examination programme to our Grade 9 and 10 students.

There is an extensive extra-curricula programme at BIS which includes the Visual and Performing Arts, sports teams, student government and Model United Nations. Students are encouraged to make the most of the leadership and participation opportunities provided by the Student Council. The school is constantly seeking other positive avenues for student involvement, including student assemblies, clubs, artistic performance, international public speaking, European Student Forum, local and global service projects and peer support programmes.
