Athletics

At BIS, we subscribe to the ancient credo - Mens sana in corpore sano - “a sound mind in a sound body”. Sport is an important part of both the regular BIS curriculum and of After School Activities (ASA).

A professional and progressive-minded Physical Education (PE) team and exceptional facilities guarantee a wide range of sports activities across all ages and ability levels. Facilities include sports halls, track and field areas, a fitness centre, and dance studios.

BIS students compete for points, goals and best times as the "BIS Lions", facing other schools in the Munich and Haimhausen region in friendly competitions. Our competitive sports teams also participate in the German International School Sports Tournaments (GISST) (U14 & Varsity) and the European Sports Conference (ESC) (Varsity) and travel to other schools within Germany and Europe. These teams include Skiing, Soccer, Volleyball, Cross Country, Badminton, Rugby, Swimming, Basketball, Volleyball, Tennis and Track & Field.

Students prepare for competitions following structured and balanced training programmes, training vigorously two to three times per week.  While various athletes are recognized for special accomplishments at season’s end, every BIS student who competes experiences the rewards of teamwork and develops “a sound mind in a sound body”.

An international school with the Alps at our doorstep

As an international school with a panoramic view of the Alps, BIS offers its own extra-curricular ski programme in the Scheffau ski region of Austria for preschool ages through grade 12. BIS Community Skiing is open to students, parents and staff on Saturdays in December, January, February and March. Separately, the BIS Alpine Ski Race Team provides competitive opportunities for more advanced students.

A special award: Shane Walsh Till Commitment to Sport

Each year, BIS awards the Shane Walsh Till Commitment to Sport Award to a student who has shown the same 'can-do' spirit and commitment to sport as Shane Walsh Till himself.

Congratulations to Sarah Höflmayr & Giorgio Lombardi on receiving the Award for the 2022-2023 school year.

Shane Walsh Till always said as a kid he thought he was either going to play Cricket for Australia or Australian Rules Football. As he grew older and realised that dream was not a reality he was very disappointed. He played State Level Aussie Rules Football and Cricket in Australia and played very well but either were going to be his future career. Rather he took on the career as an educator and an amazing one at that. Whatever he did, he did well. He was a teacher at BIS from 1998 until 2002. He taught geography, history and social studies. His goal in life was to visit every continent. He almost made it. He was tragically killed in the Bali terrorist attacks in October 2002. Shane left an impression on everyone he encountered. We all remember Till for many of the same reasons. His infections smile, his willingness to argue a topic, his love of teaching, his love of traveling, his love of sport and his love for the mighty (a matter of opinion) Melbourne Football Club - The Melbourne Demons. During his time at BIS, Shane coached many sports, supported students by attending games as a chaperone and brought his love of life to everything he did. He lived every day to the fullest.

The Shane Walsh Till sports award is in honour of his infectious 'can-do' spirit and his commitment to sports.
